Title: Naturalism as Contiguity
Location: http://www.peterwall.net/index.php/2010/04/28/naturalism-as-contiguity/
Type: Blog
Merit: So-so
Target: On Defining Naturalism as a Worldview

  • Consult:
  • Argument: Wall claims Carrier's definition of supernaturalism is unnecessarily confusing and prefers defining it as a breach of continuity.
  • Content:
  • Response: Carrier's definition avoids the issue of there simply being other natural laws we are not aware of which would incidentally be identified as "supernatural" with Wall's definition. Carrier fixes a meaningful goal-post whereas Wall's definition is more of a temporary subjective discovery construct, based on what we already happen to expect from this uniformity.

Title: Did Christ Have a Physical Body?
Location: http://www.reclaimingthemind.org/blog/2007/10/did-christ-have-a-physical-body/
Type: Blog
Merit: Lame
Target: The Empty Tomb: Jesus Beyond The Grave, chapter 5

  • Consult: Spiritual Body FAQ
  • Argument: Wallace claims translation errors have possibly been made either incompetently or deliberately in order to deny the historicity of the raising event.
  • Content: Wallace admits he hasn't read ET, randomly complains about mythicism, claims Carrier's translation of Romans 8:11-13 sucks, speculates about the intentions of the mistranslation despite not knowing what Carrier is actually arguing, and calls into question the integrity of all the chapters of ET based off of the faulty translation.
  • Response: Spiritual Body FAQ Wallace's criticisms of the translation are correct, but have nothing to do with what's being argued.

Title: A selection of interesting articles
Location: http://toegodspot.blogspot.com/2006/05/selection-of-interesting-articles.html
Type: Blog
Merit: So-so
Target: Critical Review of Victor Reppert's Defense of the Argument from Reason

  • Consult:
  • Argument: Walters: "...it cannot be denied that evolutionary naturalists give a much poorer account for our ability to do science and engage in rational activity than the theist. There's just no way around the problem of radical skepticism."
  • Content:
  • Response: Perhaps the finicky evolutionary history behind our mental faculties is unflattering and fraught with all the problems that go along with being undermineable and damageable computational machines, but pretending like "thoughts are magic" is a better or more compelling account of rational activity is little more than existential vanity.

Title: The Argument from Reason
Location: http://toegodspot.blogspot.com/2006/05/argument-from-reason.html
Type: Blog
Merit: So-so
Target: Critical Review of Victor Reppert's Defense of the Argument from Reason

  • Consult:
  • Argument: Nonphysical minds would be reliable and materialistic ones would not be.
  • Content: Mainly Walters presents a list of links concerning the AfR and gives his general impressions of them. He has numerous superficial complaints against Carrier that he doesn't really get too far into. He does manage to present a couple things perhaps worth responding to.
  • Response:

Title: I'm detecting a pattern here...
Location: http://toegodspot.blogspot.com/2007/03/im-detecting-pattern-here.html
Type: Blog
Merit: Lame
Target: Bloglet Las Jesus

  • Consult:
  • Argument: Carrier's response to the bone box of Jesus is dubious and he only concluded the situation was a "fiasco" because of his faith based views on Jesus as ahistorical.
  • Content: Lumping a list of skeptics together and conspiracy theorizing about their motives.
  • Response: None. It's just accusations with no evidence.

Title: Is the Universe too big and old to be a creation of the Christian God?
Location: http://christiancadre.blogspot.com/2011/02/is-universe-too-big-and-old-to-creation.html
Type: Blog
Merit: So-so
Target: Why I am Not a Christian

  • Argument: Christians don't have to provide evidence for their ad-hoc explanations any more than scientists do. If the Christian god created a (relatively) tiny universe for the salvation drama stage it would not demonstrate his power or mystery.
  • Response: I do think that Carrier overstates his case a bit, but on balance, metaphysical naturalism requires an immense universe filled with trillions of molecular "experiments" to get life up off the ground. Whereas, if we are appealing to the Bible (which Walters does), we also have to deal with the other indications that the theologians of that day had the expectations of the evidence of extreme power set rather modestly by modern standards. Carrier references the concept to support his argument, but see Ed Babinski's chapter 5 in The Christian Delusion: Why Faith Fails in addition to my comprehensive defense of it: http://war-on-error.xanga.com/tags/tcdchapter5/

Type: Blog
Merit: Lame
Target: On the Deceptions of David Wood

  • Argument: Walton revives Wood's claim that an argument in Carrier's book, Sense and Goodness Without God, was referring to all possible flying blue monkeys and not just the blue monkeys who are not flying out of Carrier's rear.
  • Response: Interpretative charity failures don't tell us much about Carrier (who was just trying to be humorous), but they do tell us quite a bit about Walton and Wood.

My friends and I watched Carrier in the Carrier-Licona debate, and Carrier either won or tied. But this time, as Carrier admits, Craig got the better of him - due to sound preparation. • Consult: That Habermas-Licona Interview
  • Argument: Apologetic arguments are so awesome and Carrier's case sucks so much that he simply must have been avoiding the issue deceitfully to save face.
  • Content: It's a more or less accurate summation of the interview minus the interpretation of Carrier's motives.
  • Response: Carrier said, "...[Wood's response] is a typical fallacious diatribe from him. Obviously I couldn't win with an audience like that, so I should just ignore blowhards like him. Everyone who only wanted a throw-down, hard-ball debate, can complain all they want. Since that's like going to a U2 concert and complaining it's not Judas Priest, I should have ignored them, and so I shall."
